Applied AI Researcher for Industrial applications
A better world needs more perspectives — new knowledge, new technologies, and a unifying force to bring them together. RISE, Sweden’s independent research institute and innovation partner, is that force. With broad expertise, we deliver sustainable solutions and drive transformation across traditional sectors. Working closely with all industries, we know that solving complex challenges is most effective when it’s creative, bold, and fun.
About us
At RISE, we have long experience in using cutting edge research and technology in AI to solve real world problems. In the department of Industrial Systems, we’re pushing the boundaries of research and innovation in industrial applications. Does this sound interesting? We now have an open position in Stockholm or Linköping, Sweden. We follow a hybrid work model that allows employees to split their working time between the office and their home workspace.
The role
Are you passionate about solving real-world problems with cutting-edge AI? Join our team and work on applied AI projects in collaboration with industry, the public sector, and academia. In addition, you’ll play a key role in the AI Factory Mimer, a flagship EU initiative and one of Sweden’s most important efforts to accelerate the responsible use of AI across sectors.
At the department of Industrial systems we work closely with leading Swedish industrial partners, particularly within the manufacturing and process industries, to address real-world challenges using advanced AI solutions. Our projects span across sectors that are vital to Sweden’s economic backbone, including base industries and high-tech manufacturing. By integrating domain expertise with cutting-edge AI methods, we help drive innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in industrial operations. This collaboration ensures our work remains grounded in practical impact while contributing to the technological advancement of Sweden’s industrial landscape.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop and apply AI models to tackle complex challenges across diverse industrial domains, including the process industry, defense sector, and Swedish base industry.
- Collaborate closely with SMEs to deliver state-of-the-art solutions tailored to their needs.
- Develop and use a broad set of tools and techniques to ensure the right solution for each unique problem.
- Contribute to high-impact research and publish in leading scientific venues.
The position may be subject to security classification, which means that you may be required to undergo a security clearance in accordance with the Swedish Security Protection Act, either now or at a later stage.
Who are you?
To be successful in the role, you will need:
- A PhD in a relevant field with a proven track record of conducting high-quality research.
- Solid expertise in machine learning, particularly deep learning and are proficient in developing solutions using Python.
- Documented experience in machine learning, especially reinforcement learning, language models, and agents.
- Fluency in both Swedish and English, written and spoken, is essential.
- Have applied AI methods in collaboration with industrial customers—such as in production optimization, predictive maintenance, or quality control.
Experience working with SMEs and industrial clients, particularly within the Swedish manufacturing sector, is highly valued. Familiarity with industries such as automotive, aerospace, and process manufacturing, along with a solid understanding of their operational challenges and innovation needs, is a strong advantage. Experience applying AI to real-world, multi-modal data and contributing to research funding applications is also considered a significant asset, ideally supported by a few years of professional experience.
To fit the role perfectly you also have:
- Strong problem-solving skills and a pragmatic approach to AI development.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
- A passion for staying at the forefront of AI research and innovation.
