AI Expert Life Science & High-Performance AI
A better world needs new perspectives. That requires new knowledge, new technologies, and strong forces that bring them together. RISE, Sweden’s independent research institute and innovation partner, is that gathering force. Now we are building Mimer – Sweden’s national AI Factory, a European hub for AI research, infrastructure, and adoption.
We are now looking for an AI Expert with deep experience in life science, who will work hands-on with researchers, clinicians, startups, and industry to push the boundaries of AI-enabled science and innovation.
About us
Within the Digital Systems division, there is the Department of Computer Science, comprising around 100 people, which provides leading expertise in the core areas of AI, Cybersecurity, 5G/Edge, IoT, advanced data analytics, as well as the development of software and data center technologies. All these areas are at the forefront of the digital transformation of industry and society and are critical for Sweden’s competitiveness.
Mimer is one of 19 European AI Factories under the HPC framework, working to strengthen industrial competitiveness and innovation both within Sweden and across borders.
About the Position
This role is at the core of Mimer’s mission: helping organisations solve real-world life science challenges using modern AI and high-performance computing. You will work directly with partners in areas such as medical imaging, precision health, drug discovery, genomics, and large-scale clinical data - translating needs into technical solutions and guiding AI projects from idea to deployment. Location is Luleå and we follow a hybrid work model that allows employees to split their working time between the office and their home workspace.
You will operate much like an AI deployment engineer:
- Working side-by-side with researchers, clinicians, SMEs, and companies
- Scoping problems, designing solution paths, and executing hands-on development
- Bringing state-of-the-art methods (LLMs, vision models, multimodal models, GNNs, foundation models) into real usage
- Advising on data strategy, governance, FAIR practices, and sensitive-data workflows
- Helping users leverage Mimer’s coming AI/HPC infrastructure and secure environments
- Contributing to training, workshops, and community building
You will also collaborate with our teams across autonomous systems, materials science, trustworthy AI, and data spaces - and contribute to Europe-wide AI Factory activities.
Who You Are
We are looking for someone who combines strong applied AI skills with the ability to work directly with users - a problem-solver who thrives in real deployments, not just prototypes.
Requirements:
- Several years of experience applying AI in life science, with a background in one or more domains such as:
- Medical imaging (e.g., MRI, CT, digital pathology; familiarity with DICOM or BIDS formats is a plus)
- Clinical or biomedical data (e.g., EHRs, fMRI, longitudinal or multimodal datasets)
- Bioinformatics and genomics (e.g., workflows such as Nextflow/Galaxy/Snakemake, Biopython)
- Molecular modelling, drug discovery, or cheminformatics (e.g., RDKit/datamol, molecular featurisation, quantum chemistry tools)
- Strong skills in deep learning (PyTorch/TensorFlow), data processing, model development, and evaluation
- Experience with large datasets, high-performance data loading, distributed or GPU–accelerated training
- Experience with sensitive data, secure environments, or federated learning
- MSc, PhD or equivalent experience in AI, machine learning, computer science, biomedical engineering or computational biology
- Excellent communication skills in English;
It’s meritorious with experience with HPC environments (Slurm, multi-GPU/multi-node training). It’s also a plus if you can communicate in Swedish.
You are comfortable collaborating across academia, hospitals, startups, and industry, and enjoy teaching and explaining AI to diverse audiences. Above all, you are curious, pragmatic, and structured, eager to build solutions that create real value and positive impact for healthcare, life sciences, and society — thriving in collaboration while confidently setting direction and navigating complexity when needed.
Are We a good Match?
At RISE, you’ll join a vibrant, mission-driven environment built on openness, collaboration, and innovation. At Mimer, you will be:
- Helping build Europe’s next generation of AI infrastructure
- Working hands-on on high-impact life science projects
- Shaping how Sweden and Europe use AI in medicine and science
If you want to be at the forefront of applied AI — where cutting-edge research meets real societal value — we would love to have you on board.
Welcome with your application!
