Master's thesis: Precision Metal Additive Manufacturing using LPBF
Project Overview
RISE is collaborating with industry to advance precision manufacturing using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) for demanding applications in regulated sectors. The focus is on improving dimensional accuracy and surface quality by optimizing process parameters, scanning strategies, and build preparation workflows, including the use of simulation and build-preparation software to minimize supports and enhance print quality.
Thesis Aim and Main Tasks
The thesis will focus on characterization of LPBF-printed components and evaluation of digital tools that support precision manufacturing. Main tasks include:
• Literature study on precision LPBF, dimensional accuracy, and surface integrity for metal AM
• Design of experiments, manufacturing and characterization of printed benchmark geometries using various techniques such as optical profiling for surface topography and Macro-/micro metrology to quantify deviations from CAD
• Comparison of different parameter sets / scanning strategies with measured deviations
• Testing and evaluating AM software for build preparation, support strategies, and (where available) process simulation
• Summarising findings and providing recommendations for a more robust LPBF workflow for high-precision applications
Qualifications
We are looking for one Master’s student (30 credits) with:
Background
• Enrolled in a Master’s programme in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline
Skills and interests
• Strong interest in lab work, experimental methods, and materials/geometry characterization
• Enjoys data analysis, structured documentation, and systematic comparison of results
• Motivated to work in an applied, industry-oriented research environment
Meriting knowledge
• knowledge of Additive Manufacturing, especially metal AM / LPBF
• Experience with AM-related software (build-preparation, CAD/CAE, simulation) is a strong plus
• Interest in Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) is an advantage
Practical Information & Application
Extent: 30 Credits
Start: Beginning of February 2026
Compensation: 10,000 SEK for travel, materials and the like after the project is completed and approved
